5 Sustainable Fashion Resolutions for 2022

5 Sustainable Fashion Resolutions for 2022

Another year, another 365 opportunities to achieve your goals and resolutions for 2022! This year, we encourage you to set sustainable fashion resolutions and join us in taking small steps towards a brighter future! Not sure where to start? We've put together a few goals and intentions to get you easily started in creating a more meaningful connection with your wardrobe.
1. Shop secondhand, shop sustainable / ethical
Pre-loved garments have so much more life in them than you might think! Visit thrift stores, consignment shops or apps such as Depop and Poshmark to find practically new pieces. If you can't find what you need second-hand, shop exclusively from ethical and sustainable brands. Re-think your wardrobe and invest in pieces you can wear 100+ times (at least)! By supporting small, ethical and sustainable brands you are voting with your dollars for an industry that's kinder to people and the planet. Check out GoodOnYou for a comprehensive directory of brands and their impact on people and the planet.

2. Wear what you already own
We all have that back of the closet section where once loved pieces have been tucked away for months if not years! Start by pulling out every single garment you own and re-organize your closet to clearly see what you have. With a fresh-looking closet, it will feel like you are shopping it for the very first time! Make sure to get creative with styling what you already own - after all, using what we have is the most sustainable act of all.

3. Understand the 'true cost' of fashion
Let's be honest, the fashion industry is complicated and most of the time not transparent with consumers - but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't ask questions! Take the time to research brands, reach out and ask them tough questions, watch documentaries and read books about the impact of fashion on our planet and follow sustainable fashion advocates and eco-activists on social media. Knowledge is power and once we start understanding, we can take steps together to change the industry.

4. Buy less, choose well, make it last
A timeless quote by Vivian Westwood we swear by! Take the time to consider what you need, how it was made, who made it and whether you will wear it for years to come. Rather than being influenced by current trends, choose to buy clothing from brands that are ethical, high-quality and whose values align with yours. Extend the life of your garments by following washing and drying instructions correctly (consider using an eco-friendly detergent) and mend/repair if you can (or bring it to a local tailor/seamstress).
5. Join or support grassroots organizations
There are so many incredible organizations that are fighting for more ethical, transparent, sustainable and inclusive fashion industry. Joining and supporting their efforts is free of charge (although donations are often welcomed) and will amplify your voice for change. Check out Fashion Revolution, Remake, Canopy and Fashion Takes Action (Canadian).
